What was really engrossing about this project is the utterly terrifying history that it’s based on. It only took reading a handful of articles and watching a few documentaries to start writing on the same day.
I finished the piece in less than 3 days.
I can honestly say i’ve never developed characters i’ve so thoroughly loved or hated, with both equally manifesting themselves tangibly, until now.
Esma, my protagonist, and another female character, Lejla, embody the strength and vulnerability of womanhood in a war dominated by men; as well as the sheer weight of loss and its devastating affects on mental health.
As someone who’s trying to kick my own ass and be more accountable for the goals I want to reach as a writer, starting now, i’m glad I came back to the drawing board with a concept that is much different than anything i’ve attempted thus far.
I’ve pretty much written exclusively in Horror & Sci Fi for the past few years.
They’re still very much genres I love, and prefer. But just because that’s the majority of my viewing history, doesn’t mean that’s all I can or should write about. I‘ve finally matured enough as a writer to understand that.
